Opinion: Vote for Galvin
Don Callahan— Fairbanks
To the editor: I watched the three Galvin-Young debates in the major cities of Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau and am in no doubt that I am voting for Alyse Galvin to be our one representative in Congress.
I have written to Don Young a number of times on pressing issues in the state and nationwide, and in almost every case I received back a form letter many months later which had little or nothing to do with the subject matter I asked him to address.
Recently, I wrote to all three of our legislators in Washington to stop wasting money on the failed “drug war” and look to what other countries have been doing that actually bring results in solving drug abuse and the opioid crisis. Specifically, for one, Portugal has been cited in many cases (the latest being a very long article in Time Magazine in August) that they decriminalized drug use and have stopped locking up the addicted but instead provide treatment. This has been successful.
In Congressman Young’s reply, he thanked me for my recent concerns and told me that with his help that Congress was going to appropriate another $4 billion to “fight the drug war.” Congressman Young says he listens to his fellow Alaskans. I have not seen that to be the case. Seems he is busy listening to large corporations and rich individuals in the rest of the nation who can help fill his re-election coffers.
It is time for a change.
I am voting for Alyse Galvin, who will listen to us, respond meaningfully, and do the best for the residents of Alaska.
